Nelson voters will head to the polls in September, as three candidates already have qualified for the special council election.

Paul Feldman, 63, and Thad Thacker, Jr., 63, are both seeking the seat of the late Nelson City Councilman Willie Pye in the Sept. 21 race.

Steven Thacker, 28, has qualified to run for the late Councilman James "Jim" Ingram's seat. He is the son of Councilwoman Penny Thacker.

Qualifying continues through 4:30 p.m. today at the Pickens County Elections Office at 1266 East Church St. in Jasper. The qualifying fee is $25.

The seats are at-large, with voters citywide deciding both nonpartisan races.

Ingram, whose term runs through Dec. 31, 2011, died last month after a 13-month battle with cancer.

Pye, whose term runs through Dec. 31, 2013, died from a heart attack in May after fighting a fire on the lawn of his home.
