The Towne Lake rivalry moved to the Twin Creeks Softball Complex for the Region 5AAAAA softball tournament Wednesday, but when it was over, Woodstock had the guaranteed trip to the Class AAAAA state sectionals.

The Lady Wolverines topped rival Etowah, 6-1, to keep their defense of the state title alive, riding another 13-strikeout performance from pitcher Jessica Martin.

"That was our goal at the beginning of the year, just to get back and see what happens," Woodstock coach Tonya Sebring said. "We are happy, but we want to make sure we finish up tomorrow playing strong."

Woodstock will face the winner of Wednesday night's late game between Etowah-Harrison at 5 p.m. this afternoon at Twin Creeks to decide the No. 3 seed in the playoffs.

The Lady Wolverines got on the board in the top of the first with a double from Nikki Roddy, who then scored off a Betsy Lawson single and error to first to make it 1-0.

One batter later, Carrie Williams' double brought in Jessica Symanski, who singled off the shin of Etowah pitcher Katherine Nienow, to make it 2-0 and a wild pitch allowed Lawson to come home for the three-run inning.

Woodstock began to produce runs again in the third when Tori Moody's stand-up triple brought home Symanksi, who walked to start the inning. Lawson matched with a single, which allowed a courtesy runner to score, making the tally 5-0.

The Lady Wolverines got their final run in the fifth when Symanksi singled to open the inning, then advanced to second when a low pitch escaped the grasp of the catcher and scored when an attempted double play resulted in an overthrow to third.

Etowah matched the run in the bottom of the inning when Morgan Smith singled to right and came home on a triple from Tyler Templet to make it 6-1.

Etowah Parent. says -
While we Etowah parents appreciate any coverage we get, please get your player facts straight. Katherine Nienow is a left fielder and has been for 3 years while at Etowah. She has never been a pitcher. The pitcher was Rachel Schmelzer. Thank you.
