“I have tried many Thai restaurants. I still think we have the best Thai food here. We just sell Thai food. We are more authentic,” said Ginger Hsu, who moved with her family from Taiwan in 1984 to be close to a sister in Marietta. “From 20 years ago, we have never changed that.”
When the family relocated, Hsu’s brother Andy Hsu, who is chef and owner, was still in school. Hsu, who waitressed in a Thai restaurant in Midtown at the time, said, “I fell in love with Thai food and made my family love Thai food. I felt the food was so wonderful.”
In 1994, her father asked his children if they wanted to open a Thai restaurant since they loved Thai food so much. “That’s how it happened. We didn’t have a lot of money so me and my brother cooked in the kitchen. Another sister was taking care of the dining room,” Hsu said.
After six months, business improved and Hsu worked as a waitress in the dining room. Ten years later, Hsu was promoted to manager and continues that role today. Their sister, Lucy, also works with the business.
Hsu’s parents have since died, but Hsu credits her father for its success.
“Without my father, we would not have this restaurant. He’s the one that came out of the money,” she said.
Though the restaurant started with humble beginnings, it has grown to be a Cobb County favorite.
Lemon Grass Thai features a variety of authentic menu items such as chef’s specials and entrees along with salads, curry lovers entrees, noodles, fried rice, soups, appetizers and more.
“Thai food — it’s not greasy like some Asian food. Thai food is lighter,” Hsu said.
Tea Rose, a small steamed dumpling with ground pork and vegetables, is a customer favorite along with their made-from-scratch spring rolls.
The chicken coconut soup is another popular item.
“Everybody will call me from everywhere, if they move or go home and want the recipe because they say they cannot find the same soup anywhere,” Hsu said.
The curry dishes are also popular.
“The reason that they’re good is that they’re made from different curry or different color of the chili pepper,” she said.
The friendliness of the staff also keeps customers returning for more.
“Many of the staff has worked at the restaurant close to 10 years. They’re always very friendly. It’s a neighborhood restaurant feel,” Hsu said.
Dine in or take out is available at Lemon Grass. They are open for lunch Monday through Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and dinner Monday through Thursday 5 to 10 p.m., and Friday and Saturday 5 to 10:30 p.m., and Sunday 4 to 9:30 p.m.
