There is an old joke from back in the day that tells of a man who said that he made all of the important decisions at home like who would be president and what kind of car they would own. His wife, he said, made the lesser decisions like what they would eat and what they would wear.

Qualifying begins this week for several local elections. Voters will choose the people who will really govern, the people closest to home and, therefore the most controllable...assuming that we choose to pay attention.

While the major media will focus on who will protect Afghanistan and Iraq for the next four years, we will be asked to choose the public officials who will educate our children, protect our lives and property and make sure we have water fit to drink.

The only thing we need to remember is that local government truly is representative government. But, it can be just as bad as the Feds if we choose our candidates based on how many yard signs we see.

Take a little time to do your homework. You owe it to yourself
