Reinhardt University’s Annual 5K Fun Run on Sept. 22 will raise funds for a nonprofit children’s hospital. Proceeds from the run, sponsored by the Reinhardt University Office of Student Activities, will benefit the children of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, which attends to the needs of children suffering from life threatening illnesses without regard to the family’s ability to pay.

St. Jude covers all costs of treatment at the faculty beyond those reimbursed by third-party insurers, and total costs at St. Jude when no insurance is available. St. Jude also provides assistance with transportation costs and local living expenses during treatment. Reinhardt Philanthropy Coordinator Jessica Simmons, a sophomore at the university majoring in music education and political science, is organizing the event.

“This is a really great charity event, and we are really striving to go big this year,” Simmons said. The event has gradually continued to grow, and with the increase of the student population at Reinhardt they are expecting a larger turnout.

“It’s not only a great cause, but it’s also a healthy and fun way to exercise. You not only help others, but you help yourself as well,” she said.

Since the hospital is a research center, children accepted are enrolled in a specific study. Information gathered from these studies is used in developing better treatments and has led to improved cure rates for potentially fatal pediatric diseases.

Simmons said, “We are excited to be contributing to an organization that will help to save the lives of hundreds of children.”

St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital was founded in 1962 by the late entertainer and comedian Danny Thomas. It is the first institution established for the sole purpose of conducting basic and clinical research into childhood catastrophic diseases. St. Jude treats thousands of children each year, and is supported primarily through public contributions raised by the American Lebanese Syrian Associated Charities, the fundraising arm of the hospital.

St. Jude patients are treated regardless of their inability to pay, with ALSAC covering the costs beyond those reimbursed by third-party insurers, and all cost when no insurance is available. The mission statement adopted by St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is “to advance cures, and means of prevention, for pediatric catastrophic diseases through research and treatment. Consistent with the vision of our founder Danny Thomas, no child is denied treatment based on race, religion or a family’s ability to pay.”

The race event is open to Reinhardt students, faculty, and staff as well as members of the community. Registration and check-in will begin at 8 a.m. with the Fun Run at 9 a.m.

The price for participation in the run is $15 for students, faculty, and staff, and $20 for community members. Early registration ends Monday, with the price increasing to $25 the day of the event. Registration fees include a free event T-shirt for all participants.

Participants can run, jog, or walk. Bicycles, scooters or roller blades are discouraged, but strollers and wheelchair participants are encouraged to participate.

All entrants who register early are guaranteed to receive a short-sleeved T-shirt. Bottled water will be offered for the participants, and awards will be given for different categories across the finish line. Registration for the 5K Fun Run can be completed through the link found at
