Attention Voters Many voters are asking for an explanation of the "Special Election" item Homestead Option Sales and Use Tax ( HOST) on this year's November ballot. The confusion seems to center around two issues:

  1. The structure of the proposed tax. What does it cover?
  2. The proper method of voting for this measure.
The structure of the tax is based on a 1 percent increase in sales taxes in Cherokee County. At the same time it provides for a reduction, in an equal dollar amount of homeowners' property taxes. Passage of this measure will not increase revenue to the county. It will, however, distribute the tax burden more equitably among all who take advantage of the many county services available to all. including businesses. The 1 percent increase will be covering expenses of other residents. Some property owners may consider this a fairer method.

The method of voting for this measure was made somewhat challenging by the legislation. The measure is divided into TWO parts and a yes vote is needed on both parts. I personally will not support any new taxes. T-SPLOST, HOST or any other. My personal decision is due to our economy, the election, the lack of increasing income and we do not need to pay more taxes at this time. The language is tricky so think hard when you vote Nov. 6.
