Audit costing dearly

I read with frustration Wednesday’s Tribune article regarding the audit into the failed Resource Recovery Development Authority.

The Board of Commissioners approved yet another increase bringing the cost to $400,000, five times the original bid. The auditor bid $75,000 total, yet has gone back to the well numerous times for more money without any justification to the taxpaying citizens.

The commissioners approved this latest increase claiming District Attorney Shannon Wallace supported paying these additional funds. Yet Ms. Wallace was quite clear that she has nothing to do with the amounts paid to the auditor and merely asked for a deadline for the audit to be completed.

She also indicated that she did not even know how much of the audit had been completed to date.

I understand the commissioners are between a rock and hard place because to deny an increase makes them look like they are sabotaging the audit. But to approve numerous increases without knowing how much work has even been completed makes them look stupid.

This year alone we have sunk another million dollars into this fiasco ($100,000+ per month payments plus the $400,000 audit+ attorney fees). Further this is an audit, not an investigation.

The audit is only as good as the documents provided. The commissioners have copies of these documents. Let the citizens see these documents as we are entitled to under the law and we can form our own conclusions.
