ACWORTH — An arrow shot from a bow will cut the ribbon Aug. 21 to signal the grand opening of the new Cabela’s in southwest Cherokee County.

This week, the outdoor gear retailer announced the store will be ready for business in late August and set the grand opening of its second store in Georgia, which is expected to employ 200 full- and part-time workers and positively impact the economy in the county.

The date will mark the long-awaited opening for the store in the northeast corner of I-75 and Highway 92 in Cherokee Village, where construction began in early fall 2013. The grand opening will begin at 10:45 a.m., and doors will open at 11 a.m.

The company has said southwest Cherokee County was chosen for its strategic location in metro Atlanta and strong retail market.

Cherokee Office of Economic Development Director Misti Martin said Thursday the new store is helping attract other retailers and businesses to the area and will also bring sales tax dollars into the county.

“Obviously, it will boost our sales tax dollars, just like the outlet mall has done, and because it has regional impact, it will bring people from other areas into Cherokee,” Martin said. “It will be a great addition to the redevelopment on Highway 92. It will be a positive for Cherokee Corporate Park. More dining opportunities will be attracted and other retail will be attracted.”

Opening day will begin a weekend-long celebration, highlighted by special appearances, family events and giveaways, according to the news release.

The release said the store will be built in Cabela’s next-generation layout, “designed to surround customers in an outdoor-like experience with museum-quality wildlife displays.”

The store will also feature a large mountain replica, a gun library, a bargain cave, a boat shop, an indoor archery range, a deli and a fudge shop.

The 100,000-square-foot Acworth location will join the company’s 42,000-square-foot store that opened in Augusta in March.

Cabela’s, which was founded in 1961, operates 58 stores across North America and plans to open an additional 19 over the next two years.

Please have EMTs on site as many outdoor enthusiasts will most likely faint at this event. :)
