When I was at Cherokee High School, we had a viceprincipal named Vince Thompson. We were all intimidated by Mr. Thompson because he was rumored to have come from a reform school, had a black belt in karate and hated teenagers. I don’t know if any of these things were true, but I do not recall Mr. Thompson doing anything to dissuade the stories.

One of his tricks had to do with boys fighting in school. If caught, you and your opponent were required to stand in the school lobby and embrace for the entire lunch period. This, today, would be met with wails of “abuse” from “parents” and lawsuits from attorneys smelling a payday.

In my day the end result was a noticeable diminishment in boys fighting in school. You don’t know the meaning of “homophobic” until you have been a teenaged boy in North Georgia in the 1960s.

What a shame we can’t do this with presidential debates. It would, possibly increase the level of civility in public discourse. My guess is that this would, at least, wipe that smirk off of Joe Biden’s face.
