The Cherokee County American Cancer Society Dance for the Cure at Stratus Bar and Grill at Laurel Canyon last Friday included a surprise dedication ceremony honoring Cancer Society volunteer and former Canton City Councilman Wade Buchanan.

The event to raise money for the fight against cancer was coordinated by Buchanan, whose family has been deeply touched by cancer. The community leader has been the host of annual events since 1993 in dedication and remembrance of his son and other family and friends affected by cancer.

A golf tournament is also planned to raise funds for the Cancer Society on Oct. 9 at the Fairways of Canton at Laurel Canyon.

“The Stratus Kitchen and Bar named our club room after him. It now dons a frosted sign out front that reads ‘Wade Buchanan Club Room,’ said Anna M. Meagher.

The club’s golf pro, Stan Moore, gave the dedication speech for the event.

“But there is one person who has been such a positive influence and an incredible supporter that we don’t know where we would be today without his help,” Moore said. “Heck, this beautiful golf course and clubhouse wouldn’t even be here without his vision and hard work.”

Moore said that Buchanan brought the golf club its first golf tournament and has always been supportive of the golf course.

“He recently even paved the way with some phone calls so we could work with the Cherokee County School

Board to partner with two local elementary schools to introduce golf into their physical education programs,” Moore said.

Buchanan’s goal for the upcoming golf tournament, in its 20th year, is $20,000.

Pre-registration is encouraged, but not required and those who would like to participate can send checks made out to American Cancer Society to: Wade Buchanan P.O. Box 1149 Canton, 30169.
