CANTON — The Canton City Council will vote Thursday night whether or not to accept bids for the construction of an office building at the Hickory Log Creek Reservoir and for paving a driveway at the reservoir.

Bids for construction of the building ranged from $425,000 to $784,000.

The operations building will actually consist of two buildings: an 1,800-square-foot building with three offices, a conference room, records room, bathroom with shower and a water testing laboratory, as well as a 900-square-foot garage and maintenance facility.

The budget established for the project is $450,000, according to a memo from Reservoir Manager Dave Hatabian.

In the memo, Hatabian recommended the low bidder, Benchmark Tuscany of Douglasville.

The company offered alternatives to save the city about $12,000 each: deleting awnings from the building’s plan and deleting decorative brackets.

With these alternate reductions, which Hatabian recommended, the bid for the building comes to $400,000.

Paving bids came in from $94,000 to $107,000 to pave the 810-foot driveway.

The reservoir board of managers recommends the lowest bidder, Still Construction Co. of Powder Springs, in the amount of $94,747.

Accepting bids for both projects is part of the meeting’s consent agenda.

The city of Canton owns 25 percent of the 414-acre reservoir located in north Canton. The Cobb County-Marietta Water Authority has 75 percent ownership. Payment for the building and the paving will be split along those lines.

In the fall, Canton and the CCMWA approved a $934,000 contract for a Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition system to improve reservoir monitoring.

At Thursday’s meeting, the council is also expected to:

* Consider approval for a consent agenda including a contract for the renovation of the council chambers, a copier lease agreement and a recommendation for water tank maintenance;

* Discuss and possibly vote on a code amendment regarding decorum;

* Discuss and act on nominees for the city’s boards, commissions and authorities;

* Discuss the council meeting format;

* Hold a second reading and vote regarding a city charter section granting the mayor the power to appoint an administrative assistant;

* Discuss the fire bond referendum;

* Discuss an economic growth proposal proposed by Cherokee County Board of Commissioners Chairman Buzz Ahrens;

* Discuss a mayor and council retreat;

* Discuss the Etowah River Protection Act;

* Discuss the Commission on Canton’s Future; and

* Discuss branding for the city.
