The Chiefs’ defense coupled with their running backs to put on a masterful performance.
North Springs (0-6, 1-1) couldn’t find a way through Sequoyah’s defensive front in the first half, and the Spartans went into halftime with minus-14 yards of total offense.
Sequoyah (3-3, 1-1) allowed only 100 yards of offense for the game and forced three turnovers and a safety.
Sequoyah coach James Teter said he was quite pleased with his team’s defensive performance.
“Our defense show up and played really well from the start,” he said. “Other than when our young kids gave up a score towards the end of the game, the defense played really well all night. Our coaches are very pleased with them.”
Led by Blake Ingleton, the Chiefs rushed for 462 yards on the ground and scored six touchdowns. Three of those touchdowns belonged to Ingleton, who rushed for 114 yards on eight carries — all of which came in the first half.
Teter credited the blocking of Sequoyah’s offensive line as the main reason his team had so much success on the ground.
“Our line did really well (Friday),” the coach said. “They have been getting better every week. They opened up some holes (Friday) for our running backs to get through.”
Sequoyah wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, needing only four plays and less than 2 minutes to drive the ball 85 yards. The majority of those yards came from a 52-yard run by Dustin Dawson, before Ingleton then capped the drive by running the ball into the end zone from 8 yards out.
Ingleton doubled the Chiefs’ lead 6 minutes later when he ran straight through the North Springs defense for a 15-yard touchdown.
Dawson made it 21-0 for with 3 minutes to go in the first quarter when he scored on a 56-yard touchdown run.
In the second quarter, Sequoyah’s defense decided to score a few points on its own.
After the Chiefs turned the ball over on downs on North Springs’ 3-yard line, the Sequoyah defense tackled North Springs running back Deven Straghn in the end zone for a safety to make it 23-0 in the Chiefs’ favor.
Ingleton scored two more touchdowns in the final 5 minutes of the half — one a 44-yard run, and the other a 7-yard pass from quarterback Trenton Dorner — to give Sequoyah a 37-0 halftime lead.
The Chiefs added two more touchdowns in the third quarter off of 1- and 15-yard runs by backup running back Jake Jensen.
North Springs finally got on the board less than a minute into the fourth quarter when running back Tyler Hemphill ran it in from 42 yards out. The Spartans were then successful on the 2-point conversion.
Hemphill finished the night with 60 yards on six carries and the only real offensive threat for a North Springs team sent to its 29th straight loss.
Ingleton, Stuart Glassic and Dustin Dawson — Sequoyah’s three leading rushers in the first half — did not play in the second.
After the game, Teter expressed his satisfaction with the win.
“For the most part, I’m pretty pleased,” he said. “There were times we got sloppy, but, for the most part, I’m happy. It’s nice to get our first region win and get that monkey off of our back.”
