Fans will see the full race program this evening at the dirt track in Woodstock, as well as a Limited Late Model championship race.
Tonight will also be ladies night at the track, with grandstand tickets $5 for any woman in attendance.
With only five points races left in each class, drivers near the top of the standings will be focused on finishing races in good standing rather than winning, since one wreck could end their title hopes.
No one knows the dangers of one bad race better than Econo Bomber driver Cody Richards.
Richards dropped to a 13th-place finish July 21 after his engine blew, and that dropped him to second in the division.
Last Saturday saw the points difference between Richards and the class’ new leader, Shane Smith, shrink when Richards finished fifth and managed to shave 10 points off of the lead of Smith, who finished 10th. Going into tonight’s race, the two are only eight points apart, with Smith at 256.
For Richards, avoiding a repeat of his 13th-place finish is paramount if he is to catch Smith.
“We’re trying to finish in the top five,” Richards said. “We all want to win, but we aren’t going to win them all. After the bad luck we’ve had the last few weeks, we just want to finish strong.”
Sitting third place in the Econo Bombers is Eric Hamby (224).
Many of Dixie’s smaller divisions continue to remain hotly contested, with the points leads up for grabs.
A second-place finish last Saturday saw Andy Morris cut into Kirk Atkins’ lead in the Super Bombers, which is now down to 20 points after Atkins finished fifth.
A fourth-place finish for Daniel Brewer, who is in third in the division, saw him stay close behind Morris with 236 points. That puts him 46 points clear of fourth-place Timmy Millwood.
In the two-horse race that is the Pony Stock division, Shannon Ethridge finally found some separation between himself and Jeremy Millsaps as won last Saturday’s race, bringing his point total to 262 and giving him an eight-point lead over Millsaps, who finished fourth.
The two had been tied at 238 points the week before.
In the Cruisers, Chris Neece’s lead shrank to 18 points over Jimmy Wilson, as Wilson finished third and Reece sixth.
Reece sits at 274 points, with Wilson at 258. Edwin Scott is the only other driver in the division with more than 200 points, as he sits in third with 232.
Unlike the smaller divisions, the points leaders of the Late Model divisions hold large leads over the rest of the field.
Michael Page, of the Super Late Models, has the distinction of being the driver with the largest lead in any division. At 258 points, he holds an 86-point lead over Tyler Millwood.
Craig Reece (266) holds a 50-point lead over Hunter Jones in the Crate Late Models.
The Limited Late Models’ second-place driver, Rucker Orr, sits 60 points behind Jake Herrell, whose third-place finish last Saturday saw his total rise to 282.
More will be at stake than just points for the Limited Late Models tonight, however, as they will run one of their season’s championship races.
The race is 25 laps long, five more than a normal race, and offers the drivers a higher payout of prize money. The winner will also receive a trophy.
