With only seven weeks of points racing left this season at Dixie Speedway, the track’s seven classes have carved themselves into their respective niches.

This weekend, Dixie will host a full racing program, along with a demolition derby, and tickets from last week’s rain-shortened schedule will be honored. The Econo Bomber and Super Bomber drivers were able to get their races in ahead of the rain, as did the visiting USCS Sprint Cars, but Dixie could not get any other racing in.

Tickets for tonight will begin at $5 for those who have ticket stubs from last week. Otherwise, admission will start at $10 for grandstand seats.

“It was the first (rainout) of the year — a partial one,” track president Mickey Swims said. “We did get the sprint cars in, but we’re letting everyone in for $5 with their stubs from last week. … We had a good show lined up for the people. Maybe the weather will stay out and let us have a good weekend.”

Unfortunately for Swims and the Dixie drivers, the National Weather Service forecasts a 60-percent chance of rain tonight, with thunderstorms likely.

When it comes to Dixie’s on-track action, the closer races have come in its smaller-engine divisions.

Cody Richards (230) holds a 14-point advantage over Shane Smith in the Econo Bombers, and Eric Hamby is the only other driver close to the two, with 198 points. Past contenders, such as David Beam and Justin Shipley, are well behind.

The Super Bombers are closer, with five drivers within 50 points of the lead. Kirk Atkins leads the group with 210 points, followed by Andy Morris 16 points back. Track regulars Daniel Brewer (190), Timmy Millwood (172) and Roy Patterson (162) are also still in the running.

In the Cruisers, Chris Neese leads with 226 points, a 26-point cushion over Jimmy Wilson.

The Pony Stocks are seeing a two-driver race as well. With 204 points, Jeremy Millsaps leads Shannon Ethridge by 12, while J.J. Garrett is another 62 points behind Ehtridge.

Like the Pony Stocks, the Crate Late Models will come down to a showdown between two drivers. Craig Reece leads with 216 points, ahead of Hunter Jones’ 194. Henry Ward is the next-closest competitor with 126 points.

Though Dixie has many close points races, there are a few drivers that have outpaced the field consistently throughout the season and should win their respective classes.

The leader of that group is Michael Page, who has consistently finished in the top five of the Super Late Models. At this point in the season, Page’s 220 points are good enough for a 78-point lead over Luther Jenkins — the largest lead in any of Dixie’s divisions.

Still, Page says he will press on the same way he has over the past two months.

“It’s good to be in the lead, but anything could happen,” he said, “so I’m just going to go out and do my best every week. You never know what could come next week, or anything.”

Still, even Page realizes there is less pressure on him to win races over the next seven weeks in order to clinch the points championship.

“Just not finishing races, something going wrong, me doing something wrong,” said Page, when asked what it would take for him to lose the points lead.

In the Limited Late Models, where Page used to run, Jake Herrell leads with 224 points. Herrell’s ahead of Rucker Orr and Michael Brewer, who each have 160 points. In the series’ last race July 7, Brewer won, with Cass Fowler and Herrell rounding out the top three.
