Frankfurt Doner and Meats offer fresh meats, bread every day

BALL GROUND — For those looking to celebrate Oktoberfest or who have a craving for German food, Frankfurt Doner and Meats in downtown Ball Ground is the perfect place to visit.

The shop ­­— tucked into a quaint storefront at 250 Gilmer Ferry Road — offers a mouth-watering array of fresh and smoked sausages, fresh pork specialties and bologna, all made on the premises. There is also a full range of meats such as ground chuck, filet and New York strip, as well as Canadian bacon, smoked bacon and smoked pork chops.

A new addition is the homemade beef jerky, offered in several tempting varieties.

In business since spring 2011, the shop also offers takeouts of sausages on a bun or wieners on a bun, as well as homemade salads.

Everything, even the bread, is made fresh in the shop, and special request orders are available.

The shop was originally opened by master butcher Detlev Werner and his daughter, Annette Werner. Many of his recipes are used to make the shop’s delicious specialties, including the fresh and smoked Bratwurst, called a German classic.

Annette Werner Lucov and husband Tim Lucov took over day-to-day operation of the store, with Detlev Werner still involved in the preparation of the meats.

Along with the Lucovs, Kristen and Tom Morris are also involved in the operation. and the two couples enjoy working together in the shop.

“The people here are so great and they have been welcoming,” Tim Lucov said. “We love it here.”

Obviously the feeling is mutual, with many regulars stopping in to pick up lunch or carry out for dinner.

A glimpse into the display case brimming with all sorts of sausages, such as American Farmer, seasoned with garlic, cracked black pepper and basil, explains a part of the popularity.

But it’s the taste that has people coming back for more.

“We have people who come from all around to shop here,” Lucov said. “Some customers buy their meat for a month when they come in.”

Among the smoked sausages are Cheddar Jalapeno, Knockwurst, Spicy County and the popular Andouille.

For those who like Cajun, there is fresh Boudin, as well as Chorizo, a spicy Mexican variety, and a number of others. They also offer their own bologna, including olive, cheddar jalapeno and pickle.

The meat and takeout shop is open Tuesday to Saturday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday from 12 to 5 p.m.
