CANTON — Though the number of new businesses in Cherokee County this February weren’t staggering, they were stable, with the 110 business licenses issued in February falling just a bit short of the 119 granted in January.

But the numbers are still down from February 2012, when 130 licenses were issued.

One of the newcomers braving the slow-mending business climate is Waleska husband and wife Perry and Kathy Williams’ budding produce market on Highway 140 near Old Donaldson Road.

Williams Family Produce is two handmade wooden stands, about 20 different fruits and vegetables and many colorful yard signs staked out front, attempting to catch the attention of passersby.

Kathy Williams said Friday that their new business, which opened last Friday, is in fact a “family” effort.

The kids, Cray, 5, and Katy, 8, like to tie on their aprons and tend to the customers, she said. And Perry Williams has the regular task of heading south to the Atlanta Farmers Market in Forest Park to pick up their inventory.

Kathy Williams said in the coming months, she and the family hope to transition to selling only locally-grown products, as they get to know more area farmers.

They would also like to expand their operation to fill their entire property on Highway 140, which, is big enough to give them room to grow.

“We’re hoping to operate year round,” Kathy Williams said. “With pumpkins and Christmas trees.”

She also dreams of adding a hot stand called Go Dog.

“You get your dog and go,” she said.
