The proposal will now go to the Holly Springs City Council at its next meeting for a decision.
Marble Quarry area residents were given the opportunity to voice their concerns to the commissioners at Thursday night’s meeting.
One resident claimed that looking at the plans for the store, there was not an adequate buffer around the parameter and the planned parking lot extended “well into eyesight” of nearby homes.
Another, Mark Pretorious, a representative with a homeowners association near the suggested site of the grocery store, also expressed concern.
“I’m going to ask that this board do what they’ve always done: the right thing. And the right thing to do is to leave this land O&I. Don’t allow this to be put right in the middle of our neighborhood,” he said.
Whether the board was affected or not by the resident suggestions, they had the same thinking and only approved annexation.
The Marble Quarry property annexation is on the agenda for Tuesday’s meeting of the Cherokee County Board of Commissioners.
The meeting will be held in Cherokee Hall at the Conference Center at The Bluffs at 6 p.m..
The city of Holly Springs in February notified Cherokee County of a possible annexation of the property on Marble Quarry Road for potential location of a grocery store.
The property is now in unincorporated Cherokee County and zoned for office and institutional use.
County commissioners expressed concerns at their meeting in February that nearby residents might not be happy if a retail business moves onto the property.
Commissioners tabled a decision on the annexation request following a recommendation by the county’s attorney.
“I would like to keep that corridor residential or light commercial. It leads to some of the county’s best neighborhoods,” Commissioner Harry Johnston said at the time.
The property owners, Robert and Breneda Livingston of Jamestown, Tenn., have asked for the property to be zoned as general commercial if it is annexed into Holly Springs.
A zoning application filed with the city lists the proposed development for the property as a “general grocery store and complementary retail use.”
The zoning application calls for a two-story commercial building with a maximum square footage of 20,000 square feet. The development will be built in a craftsman style, according to the application.
The anticipated starting date for construction on the development is September, with an anticipated completion date in September 2014.
