Other than family members I have had two life-changing meetings in my life. One occurred in December 1951. At 15 I didn’t really fully comprehend how transforming it was to meet Jesus Christ as my Savior. I knew I had felt guilty and unworthy before and forgiven and free from guilt after that moment.
I was not in church. I happened to be in a private home watching television when Billy Graham’s “Hour of Decision” began. It seemed to me he looked out of the television set and said to me, “Do you want peace?” I said no words, but my heart felt a responsive “yes!” Then he said, “You’ll never know real peace until you meet the Prince of Peace.” I met Him that night, and my life has been changed over the last 60 years plus.
The second life-changing meeting came when I was invited to a youth meeting in Montreat, N.C., where Dr. Billy Graham’s daughter, GiGi, was in attendance. It happened that Dr. Graham was at home in Black Mountain. I had the opportunity to visit their home and to meet Dr. Graham. “Just call me Billy,” he graciously said. Of course I did not. But our relationship continued over the years until he asked me to be a part of the team that worked in the New York Crusade in 1957. I will never forget being part of the first nationwide telecast from the old Madison Square Garden. The country heard George Beverly Shea sing, “How Great Thou Art” for the first time.
In less than a month Dr. Graham will be 95 years old. Now 64 years since his landmark Los Angeles crusade and more than eight years since he last spoke from a pulpit in New York City. He wants to preach again! In November he will address the nation through “My Hope AMERICA.” Individuals and church groups will gather around television sets to hear his message. I hope you will join them. More information is available online at MyHopeWithBillyGraham.org/programs.
Perhaps nothing is needed in our nation at this time more than hope! The man called “Billy” has been a public symbol of integrity and truthfulness for more than seven decades, not only in America but internationally.
If you are a believer, you may change someone’s life by having them join you to watch My Hope. If you are not, I can tell you that the message may be life-changing for you.
