An Oak Grove Elementary School teacher will represent the Atlanta Braves at the 2014 All-Star Game in Minnesota next week after she was selected as the statewide winner in People magazine’s All-Star Teacher Program.

Judy Stewart, a teacher at Oak Grove in southwest Cherokee County for 33 years, was one of 30 teachers chosen nationwide for making a difference in the lives of their students and in their community.

Oak Grove Principal Les Conley said Stewart is “most deserving” of the honor, adding he was proud to work with her.

“Judy and her husband are big sports fans, and the Braves could not be better represented,” Conley said. “Judy Stewart is an All-Star Teacher, and any student, parent or teacher who has worked with her will tell you the same thing.”

Conley said the Braves “made a superb choice” in selecting Stewart.

“She is a veteran teacher who expects the best from her students, and for over 30 years, they have lived up to those expectations,” Conley said. “She now works with both Early Intervention Program and ESOL (English to Speakers of Other Languages) students, and does a tremendous job helping children who need extra assistance — particularly in reading.”

On Sunday morning, Stewart will head to the airport to fly to Minnesota to attend the game, she said.

Each Major League Baseball team selected one representative to be honored at the All-Star Game, and one of the representatives will be featured in People magazine.

Stewart said with very qualified finalists, she was surprised to win, but it was starting to sink in. She’ll have a busy itinerary once she arrives in Minnesota, adding she’s “excited and nervous at the same time.”

Thousands of teachers from across the country were nominated, and those were first narrowed down to a pool of finalists.

Stewart was one of three Georgia teachers named as a finalist. Based on her nomination letter, experience and online votes, Stewart was chosen as the Braves’ representative.

On her online biography, Stewart said she roots for the Braves because she was “born a Georgia girl” and “raised a Braves fan.”

The All-Star Game and the 30 All-Star Teachers will be featured on FOX, Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
