CANTON — A Canton man was killed in a auto wreck Saturday after his brother, who was the driver in the accident, dozed off at the wheel, state troopers said.

Dustin Blankenship, 23, died from injuries after he and his 16-year-old brother were both ejected from the Toyota Tacoma driven by their brother, according to Sgt. Tim Nichols, commanding officer of the Georgia State Patrol post in Jasper.

The driver, Bodie Blankenship, 20, was heading home to Canton with his two brothers from their family’s lake property in Paulding County around 6:20 a.m. when the accident happened, Nichols said.

“They had been out there fishing,” Nichols said.

The Toyota Tacoma was traveling east on Knox Bridge Highway when it veered left the south shoulder of the road, struck a tree and a utility pole.

The vehicle then began to rotate before it overturned and struck another tree, according to police reports.

The driver and his younger brother, who was not identified because he is a minor, were transported to WellStar Kennestone Hospital in Marietta with injuries.

Dustin Blankenship died from internal injuries en route to Northside-Cherokee Hospital, the state trooper said.

Nichols said officials do not suspect drugs or alcohol to be involved and that Bodie Blankenship told him he had dozed off prior to leaving the roadway.

“None of them were restrained,” Nichols said.

Nichols said the investigation is closed at this time and his office has presented their findings to the Cherokee County Solicitor General’s office.

The state patrol officer said he does not anticipate any charges in the case.
