School Board member Kelly Marlow will participate in a forum Monday on the Common Core Georgia Performance Standards, a month after the Cherokee County superintendent reaffirmed the school board’s support of the standards.

An announcement on Friday stated that Marlow, along with Cobb County BoE member Kathleen Angelucci and Fayette County BoE member Dr. Mary Kay Bacallao, would participate in the forum on “How Common Core erodes local control and is bankrupting our schools.”

In August, Cherokee Superintendent of Schools Dr. Frank Petruzielo reaffirmed the Cherokee County Board of Education’s support of the Common Core standards, after Marlow voiced her support for questioning the standards in an interview with metro Atlanta media.

“It’s unfortunate when elected officials contribute to narrowly defined interest group activity through politicizing the efforts to establish national performance standards,” Petruzielo said in August.

School District spokeswoman Barbara Jacoby also commented on Marlow’s comments on the standards in August, stating that, as recently as July 24, the board voted to adopt policy that reflected the board’s support of the Common Core Georgia Performance Standards.

“Contrary to comments made by a school board member… the school board has repeatedly voted to support continued implementation of CCGPS,” Jacoby said in August.

The invitation was sent to subscribers of the Northwest 9/12 Project email newsletter, a group self-identified as being “like a tea party,” but “inspired by the founders, who were themselves inspired by God.”

“These three school board members from metro Atlanta have come together to talk about what is really happening on the ground at their respective school districts,” the invitation email stated. “Hear how these boards differ in their approach to governing and communicating with the public, how they’ve handled the pending implementation of common core, funding issues, myth verses reality and much more.”

The forum is at the Cherokee Cattle Company, at 2710 Canton Road in Marietta, on Monday at 7 p.m.

Our Board member is out and about openly opposing a direct vote of the School Board -- another clear violation of the Board of Education's Code of Ethics! Another Ethics hearing in the making?

Ms. Marlow knows nothing about Common Core. Neither do the rest of the fools, including their leader, Jack Staver. Better to keep your mouth shut and be thought a fool than to open it and remove all doubt.
