The new Cherokee County Recreation facility, which opened Memorial Day weekend, has been closed for the past week, but county officials hope to reopen Thursday once a mechanical issue has been resolved.
Bryan Reynolds, director of the Cherokee Recreation and Parks Agency, said the new miniature water park is closed because of a malfunctioning chemical controller that is responsible for controlling the pH and chlorine levels in the water.
Reynolds said the manufacturer and contractor of the splash pad are scheduled to come to the site and replace the device today.
“I hope to reopen on Thursday but I can’t do that until the item gets replaced,” Reynolds said.
It was discovered that the device was broken last Monday, Reynolds said.
“The manufacturer thinks it must have been a power surge because it’s not working properly,” Reynolds said.
Officials with the county agency have posted signs around the facility to notify patrons, he said.
“Whenever anyone has asked, we’ve explained the situation,” Reynolds said, noting that most have been understanding of the fountain park’s closure. “No one really wants to get in pool water that’s not clean.”
After six years of work on the project, a ribbon cutting for the splash pad was conducted May 25. More than 20 children came to be the first to play in the 60 feet by 40 feet facility that cost about $150,000.
The facility was scheduled to be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. seven days a week this summer, but park patrons will have to wait until the equipment installation is complete before the splash pad is ready to cool things off for visitors again.
