A Tuesday morning fire just west of Woodstock took the lives of two pets, according to fire officials.

Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services responded to a structure fire call at about 7 a.m. on the 1500 block of Wildwood Drive near Highway 92.

A caller told Cherokee 911 that flames were coming from the roof of the one-story home.

“When firefighters arrived on scene, they found heavy flames coming from the roofline,” Cherokee fire spokesman Tim Cavender said.

The homeowner told officials a family of four was renting the house from him at the time.

“They were not at home when the fire occurred,” Cavender said. “However, a cat and a Great Dane perished in the fire.”

Cavender said the fire created a big hole in the roof and caused major damage to the living room area.

No injuries were reported. Both lanes of Wildwood Drive were blocked until the operation was complete. Cavender said the cause of the fire is under investigation.
