LITHONIA, Ga. (AP) — Detectives are awaiting autopsy results to determine the cause of death of a shoplifting suspect who died after a confrontation with store employees outside a suburban Atlanta Walmart.

DeKalb County police spokeswoman Mekka Parish said Monday the man had not been identified and police hadn’t decided whether to file any charges in the Sunday incident.

According to a police report, a man was caught shoplifting two DVD players from the store about 1:30 a.m. Sunday. He ran out when confronted, but three workers caught him outside. The police report says a store security guard put the man in a choke hold and told him to tap if he couldn’t breathe.

When officers arrived, the man was unresponsive and limp. He was taken to a hospital, where he was declared dead.
