CANTON — Canton Police say they have obtained arrest warrants for the man they believe burglarized an 89-year-old woman’s home on Cherokee Street early Saturday morning and then called authorities to report a false burglary at his own home Tuesday.

Grant Johnson Gober, 33, of Canton lives on the 400 block of Cherokee Street, a short distance from the victim, and is charged with burglary in the incident Saturday and making the false report Tuesday, said Pacer Cordry, spokesman for the Canton Police Department.

Gober was also arrested April 3 on an attempted burglary charge. He was released on bond the next day, according to Cherokee County Jail records. He has not been indicted for that crime, a Cherokee County Court representative said Thursday.

According to the police report from the burglary Saturday, the victim said she was confronted by a man wearing a mask inside her house about 3 a.m. after she got out of bed to go to the bathroom.

While she was up, she told police that she noticed a light on in the room across from her bedroom.

She told police that she opened the door and was confronted by the man, who she described as about 6 feet tall and wearing a black mask, black shirt and black pants, the police report states.

She said he may have also been wearing gloves. Police later found a pair of gloves in her driveway, according to the police report.

The woman told police that when the man saw her, he said, “Go back to bed, and I won’t hurt you.”

She did, and called 911 after she thought he had left the house, the report states.

Before the victim went back to her bedroom, leaving the man in the room across the hall where she said a large amount of jewelry was stored, she told police that he also said he was in the “wrong” house and needed to go to a friend’s house up the street, the report states.

About $200 in cash was taken from the house, along with some jewelry, according to the report.

Cordry said Gober has not been arrested yet.

“We’re waiting on him to turn himself in or to pick him up,” he said.
