Prep Roundup: Woodstock edges Roswell in region tennis tournament

A sweep of the doubles points helped Woodstock to a 3-2 win on Tuesday in the first round of the Region 5AAAAAA tournament.

Luke Mixon and Spencer Hren won 6-1, 6-4 at No. 1, with Jacob Bertram and Evan Zaner rallying for a 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 2.

David Draghiceanu added a 6-0, 6-3 at No. 1 singles.

After facing Pope and Walker next week in non-region matches, Woodstock (9-6) will resume the region tournament following spring break.


Creekview 3, Riverwood 2:
A pair of three-set victories helped the Lady Grizzlies get the Region 7AAAAA win.

Olivia Rowland rallied at No. 3 singles, winning 1-6, 6-4, 10-8. So did the No. 1 doubles team of Hannah Rowland and Sloan Anderson, who won 4-6, 7-6, 6-3.

Emily Fraysier had a much easier time at No. 1 singles, winning 6-1, 6-3.

Creekview (8-5, 6-4) will close the regular season by hosting River Ridge on April 3.


River Ridge 10, Pickens 1:
Allison Clarke-Hall and Alexis Lewis each had two goals to lead the Lady Knights to a lopsided Region 7AAAA win.

Brooke DeSantis, Jessica Anthony, Aubrey Wooten, Madison Brooks, Chanel Mosley and Shannon Driscoll also scored.

Clarke-Hall had three assists, with DeSantis, Lewis and Brooks each contributing two.

River Ridge (7-4, 4-0) will step out of region play Thursday, hosting Class AAAAAA Roswell.


Woodstock 16, Allatoona 8:
Jaclyn Chiesa’s four-goal game led the Lady Wolverines to the non-area win.

Maddie Stone and Claudia Harrison each had three goals. Anna Timm had a goal and two assists, with Katie Cody and Jenna Carr each finishing with a goal and an assist. Three others scored one goal.

Vienna Monte saved 10 shots for Woodstock, which will be off until hosting Area 2AAAAAA rival North Cobb on Monday.


Late Monday

Woodstock 5, Wheeler 0:
Tanner Thompson threw a no-hitter in the Region 5AAAAAA game, striking out 10 and walking two, en route to his second win on the year.

Woodstock gave Thompson support with four sixth-inning runs that broke the game open.

Chandler Adams pitched hit in the sixth inning and had an RBI. Chase Williams was 1-for-1 with a sacrifice fly in the sixth.

Zach Zillweger was 2-for-3, while Jimmy Walker went 1-for-4 with an RBI.

Woodstock (9-5, 1-1) will play at Etowah today.

Creekview 12, North Springs 0 (5 inn.): Sophomore Jordan Pickerill threw a no-hitter in his first varsity start to help lift the Grizzlies to the Region 7AAAAA victory.

Pickerill (1-0) struck out 11 batters, including nine of the final 11 he faced, and walked two to get his first win.

Chandler Wold batted 2-for-4 with an RBI and run scored for Creekview (9-5, 8-1), which totaled 11 hits and scored twice in the first, seven times in the third and three times in the fifth.

Ryan Stevens was 2-for-4 with a double, RBI and a run scored, while Avery Smith batted 2-for-4 with a double and a triple, two RBIs and scored a run.

Creekview, which sent 12 batters to the plate in the third, will be at Riverwood (10-4, 7-2) today for another key region matchup.
