Prep Roundup: Woodstock nips Etowah in tennis

Woodstock picked up three straight-set wins and took bragging rights over its Towne Lake rival with a 3-2 win against Etowah on Friday.

The Wolverines (6-6, 3-3 Region 5AAAAAA) didn’t allow more than two games in any of their victorious flights. Ivan Vizcaya and Eric Hollar won in singles play, as did the doubles team of Luke Mixon and Spencer Hren.

Etowah needed three sets to score each of its two points. Kevin Mendes rallied for a

4-6, 7-6 (2), 6-4 win over David Draghiceanu at No. 1 singles, while the No. 2 doubles team of Austin Stark and Eric Matthews won 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 over Dylan Petersen and Evan Zaner.

Woodstock will face another county rival, Cherokee, on Tuesday at BridgeMill. Etowah will host Northview on Wednesday.


Creekview 4, Sprayberry 1:
The Lady Grizzlies handed the Lady Yellow Jackets their first loss of the season.

Lauren Pero posted a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Jordan Smith at No. 2 singles. Olivia Rowland beat Sydney Webster 6-2, 6-1.

In doubles action, Hannah Rowland and Sloan Anderson teamed for a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Ashley Cantas and Isabella Gomez. Kori Fowler and Alexis Pache defeated Madison Givens and Nicole Gentile 6-1, 6-1.

Sprayberry’s lone victory was at No. 1 singles, where Abbie Grant shut out Emily Fraysier 6-0, 6-0.

Creekview (5-4, 3-3) will travel to Forsyth Central on Tuesday.


Sequoyah 10, Osborne 0 (5 inn.):
Russ McGlamry fueled the Chiefs as they earned a Region 7AAAAA shutout.

McGlamry threw the complete game, striking out eight. At the plate, he had three hits and drove in two runs.

Evan Ezell and Tanner Norris had two hits each for the Chiefs, who scored four runs in the first inning, two in the fourth and forced the mercy rule with four runs in the fifth inning.

Sequoyah (8-2, 3-2) will host Northview on Monday.

Late Thursday

Woodstock 20, Grady 4 (6 inn.):
Taylor Adams led the offense for the Wolverines, going 3-of-4 from the plate with two doubles and an RBI.

Zach Zillweger went 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBIs. Dakota Kinney, who went 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI double, pitched three innings.

Woodstock (7-3) will host Creekview today.


Cherokee 2, Wheeler 0:
The Lady Warriors scored both goals in the second half to preserve the Region 5AAAAAA win

Cherokee didn’t get on the board until the 68th minute, when Sam Thornton scored off a cross from Morgan Harrison. It struck again with 2 minutes left, when Brittany Rogers scored on a Thornton assist.

Goalkeeper Brianna Quibano recorded the shutout and had six saves for Cherokee (6-1, 1-1), which will host Roswell on Thursday.


Late Thursday

Sequoyah 5, Gilmer 0:
Victor Rivera and Diego Ruiz had a goal and two assists each to pace the Chiefs.

Koystya Benton added a goal and an assist, while Jonathan Guy and Michael Roppo scored the remaining goals.

Ethan Riggle made six saves for Sequoyah (4-5, 1-2 Region 7AAAAA), which will travel to Hiram on Monday.
