Region basketball tournaments are now under way, and it isn’t surprising that several Cherokee County teams are vying for spots in the semifinals.

The top four teams from each region tournament advances to the state playoffs.

The Creekview girls finished atop the regular-season standings in Region 7AAAAA (A) and earned a first-round bye. The Lady Grizzlies (21-4) will play Sprayberry on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the Creekview boys won their first-round game against Northview, 56-53, on Saturday. The Grizzlies advanced into Tuesday’s quarterfinal against Riverwood.

The Sequoyah girls won their opening-round game against North Springs 50-15. The Lady Chiefs will play against Osborne on Tuesday in the quarterfinals.

As the regular-season champion, the Sequoyah boys received a first-round bye. It will open tournament play Wednesday against the winner of Saturday’s game between Osborne and Cambridge.

In Region 7AAAA, the River Ridge girls received a first-round bye and will open play Wednesday. The Lady Knights will face the winner of the first-round game between Cedartown and Heritage-Catoosa.

The winner of that game would face either Dalton or Gilmer in the region semifinals.

In the boys bracket, the Knights earned the second seed from the south. They will face Heritage, the third seed from the north, on Tuesday. The winner of that game would play in the semifinals and qualify for the state tournament.

Region 5AAAAAA held its seeding meeting Saturday night to settle a few ties.

In the girls bracket, top-seeded Cherokee will face Roswell on Monday. The Lady Warriors finished the season 14-0 in region play, while Roswell was 1-13.

No. 2 seed Woodstock (12-2) lost just twice — both to Cherokee — and will play Milton (3-11) on Tuesday. Fifth-seeded Lassiter (6-8) will play fourth-seeded Etowah (7-7).

A first-round victory means a trip to the region semifinals Friday and a state playoff berth.

In the boys bracket, No. 1 seed Wheeler was given a first-round bye after the bracket was shrunk to seven teams with Milton’s ineligibility for the playoffs. The Wildcats also received an automatic berth in the state playoffs.

Wheeler (10-4) will play the winner of Wednesday’s game between No. 4 seed Woodstock (7-7) and fifth-seeded Walton (6-8).

Cherokee, which had at 9-5 region record like Roswell, became the third seed following a tiebreaker. The Warriors will face sixth-seeded Lassiter on Wednesday.

No. 2 seed Roswell will play seventh-seeded Etowah.

A victory Wednesday would give any of the boys teams a spot in the region semifinals and the state tournament. The semifinals for the boys will be played Friday.
