CANTON — The Cherokee County Board of Education will have a strategic work session before its regular meeting Thursday to discuss the tentative budget for 2012-13.

The work session will begin at 6 p.m. and the meeting will start at 7 p.m. at the historic Canton High School/School Board Auditorium.

The school board’s fiscal year will begin July 1. Officials have not released numbers, but have said they anticipate implementing more furlough days.

During the work session, there will be presentations regarding budgets for personnel management, school operations and transportation as well as an overall status report of the tentative budget preparation.

Also during the meeting, the board is expected to:

* Consider a resolution requesting assistance from the state Department of Education Facilities Section to prepare a new five-year local facilities plan for the period of July 1, 2013, through June 30, 2018. The plan will replace the current five-year facilities plan, which ends June 30, 2013;

* Consider a final reading of the approval of a new Internet safety policy for all district employees and students; and

* Consider the approval of updates to 2012-13 school year student discipline code. Based on the recommendation of the superintendent’s ad hoc discipline code handbook committee, technical and clarification modifications were made to comply with current statutory provisions. Also, some changes were also made to reflect the new Bring Your Own Learning Device initiative and the proposed new Internet safety policy.
