HearthSide Towne Lake in Woodstock has received formal certification from the Greater Atlanta Home Builders Association and Southface Energy Institute, which administer the EarthCraft program.
The 100-unit project, which was developed by NorSouth Development, received EarthCraft Multifamily certification recognizing its sustainable and energy-efficient design and construction.
Buildings certified through the EarthCraft program must meet a number of criteria, including indoor air quality, energy and water efficiency, resource-efficient design and building materials, waste management and site planning.
At the time the project was being built, Woodstock planners and zoning officials said they wanted to encourage new development to be more sustainable, and praised the developers for their efforts in following EarthCraft standards.
Developed in 1999 by the Greater Atlanta Home Builders Association and Southface, EarthCraft is the Southeast’s standard green building certification program. The EarthCraft Multifamily program provides certifications for low-rise and mid-rise multifamily projects, including new construction and renovation.
“Receiving the EarthCraft Multifamily certification is an important accomplishment for our team,” said Brendan Barr, vice president of NorSouth Development. “This recognition advances our goal of creating livable, healthy communities that benefit our residents and surrounding neighborhoods, while minimally impacting the land and natural resources. Over time, the benefits continue for our residents through reduced energy bills, conservation of natural resources and healthier lifestyles.”
NorSouth’s HearthSide senior communities are designed and built exclusively for seniors. All feature locations within walkable, master-planned communities, and are designed by Foley Design Associates Architects and built by NorSouth Constructs.
HearthSide Towne Lake opened in late December, and is 75 percent leased. The $15.3 million senior living rental community is the centerpiece of the Madison Pointe at Towne Lake mixed-use development located at Interstate 575 and Towne Lake Parkway.
Developed by Madison Retail, LLC, Madison Pointe includes the new Pinnacle Orthopedic Center and a Walgreens, along with neighborhood specialty retail and restaurants.
Northside Hospital’s Cherokee Medical Office is immediately adjacent to the property, and Woodstock’s historic downtown is two miles away.
NorSouth Development, based in Atlanta, is a diversified real estate company, specializing in environmentally sensitive senior living communities.
Most recently, the firm was considering property in Canton to locate another senior living complex, but the project fell through when the development company failed to secure the land it wanted.
The firm was founded in 1986 and is headed by William E. Johnston and David H. Dixon, who are now partners in the firm. In addition to HearthSide Towne Lake, the company is developing HearthSide Brookleigh in north Atlanta, HearthSide Johns Creek in north Fulton County and HearthSide Peachtree City south of Atlanta.
