The 23rd annual Sequoyah Classic got under way Friday night at four locations in Cherokee County.

The event, which has grown too large in recent years to be hosted entirely at Sequoyah, saw matches also played at Etowah, Creekview and River Ridge.

The Classic will continue with pool play this morning at 9 a.m. before teams are divided into two brackets based on their record in pool play. The top two teams in each pool will advance to the gold bracket, while the remaining two teams will compete in the silver bracket.

Both brackets will award titles at the end of today’s tournament play, with gold bracket matches at Sequoyah and silver bracket matches at Etowah.

In Pool A, Sequoyah has positioned itself well after beating Northside-Columbus and Whitewater. If the Lady Chiefs win their match today against Houston County, they will enter the gold bracket as a top seed. Houston County has already suffered losses to Northside-Columbus and Whitewater.

In Pool B, Woodstock won its first match against Newnan. The Lady Wolverines were also slated to play Northgate on Friday night and Oconee County today. Northgate defeated Oconee County in a match early Friday.

In Pool E, River Ridge and Roswell were winners in early matches. The Lady Knights defeated Flowery Branch, while Roswell topped Hillgrove. River Ridge was playing Hillgrove late Friday and will face Roswell today.

In Pool F, Lassiter and Dunwoody posted victories over Lambert and Kell, respectively. Pool G saw South Forsyth defeat Mount Vernon Presbyterian, while Rockdale County won matches against Milton and Mount Vernon.

Creekview won its first match in Pool H, defeating Starr’s Mill. Also winning in that pool was Sonoraville, which topped Marietta. Creekview was facing Sonoraville in a late match Friday before playing Marietta today.

Results from Pool C and Pool D, which took place at Etowah were not available. Etowah competed in Pool C, while Cherokee is in Pool D.
