Written and directed by G. Lora Grooms, the stage version has comedy, audience participation and even an important lesson for the young ones.
“In the original tale, the Queen actually tries to get rid of Snow White four times,” said Grooms, “It’s not that she isn’t very bright, she’s just so innocent and naive, much like children can be. So I took the opportunity to remind our younger audience members — don’t talk to strangers — no matter what!”
The cast of 21 actors includes Adalee Wiseman of Woodstock as Snow White, Brad Leak as the Mirror and Kara Ratner as the Queen.
Once the Mirror and Snow White become friends, he tries to talk the Queen out of banishing her to the forest, but the Queen just won’t listen.
Snow White’s woodland friends lead her to the cottage of the seven dwarves who have a variety of interests including drawing, singing and working out.
The audience is included in the action several times during the show and even rescues her from one of the Queen’s devices.
“I had wanted to do an adaptation of Snow White for a few years and finally decided to put it into the season,” said Grooms, “It’s been a great experience coming up with a way to make the story work for all ages and our cast has done a great job with the new material.”
Also in the cast are Katie Basford, Barry Reel, Austin Branks as Tina, Horatio and Prince Terrence; Atticus Roness, Charlotte Brown, Beth Leak, Jessica Thomas, Patrick Fagan, Frances Brown, Jonathan Boyett as the Seven Dwarves and Samantha Estep, Dani Mullan, Grace Johnson, Haven Newbold, Therese Morse, Hailey Elswick, Danielle Goold, Daniella King as Snow White’s Woodland Friends.
Costumes were created by Elaine Heinisch and the sets by Jim and Cindy Flanders. The mirror frame was built by Shannon Sokol. Austin Boyett and Joann Campagna serve as assistants to the director. Amy Noel Welch is music director and Elm Street’s one-woman live orchestra.
Performances are Sept. 14 and 21 at 7:30 p.m., Sept. 19 at 10 a.m., during Cherokee Schools Fall Break, Sept. 15, 16, 22 and 23 at 2 p.m.
