Student speaks out on board

I am a sophomore at Woodstock High School. I have been attending Cherokee School District schools for the past 10 years. I have always been a straight A student in the accelerated program thanks to hard work, excellent teachers and a system that genuinely cares about the welfare of its students.

My father’s employer transferred him and it was because of CCSD’s excellent reputation that my family chose to settle in BridgeMill.

For the past six months, I have witnessed the changing atmosphere of the school board due to (School Board Member Kelly) Marlow’s actions. Ms. Marlow was elected to better the county’s education system, but she is not upholding this responsibility.

She represents the taxpayers in this county, but as a member of the school board, she should be my voice and that of the other students as well. She wastes valuable board time with petty arguments and the reopening of issues that have been previously decided.

She wrote a formal complaint to the SACS committee. SACS examined our schools about a year and half ago and found no issues. I am not sure why Ms. Marlow feels that the effectiveness of the board could have declined so rapidly. The only change in the makeup is the addition of two new board members, one whom I admire.

At Ms. Marlow’s town hall meeting she stated, “If SACS comes in and puts the board on probation, it will not affect the schools, that only the board would be penalized.” This is false, because the newspapers debunked this information.

I am appalled that she is jeopardizing my future and that of other students. I am also concerned that she has been arrested and is facing felony charges. As an elected official, I expect Ms. Marlow to be a role model.

She does have the opportunity to do the right thing. I ask her to resign, so that the focus can be on improving the education of our students. I am not old enough to vote, but I will be by the next election and I will not forget Ms. Marlow’s actions and the adverse effect they have had on the functioning of our school system.

I just wanted to say how proud I am of the Cherokee County School District (teachers, administrators, staff and all students) and especially Ms. Taylor Poole.

As soon as you begin to think that the only thing that matters to the next generation is the number of texts received and sent in a day, you get a bit of fresh air that all is not lost.

I commend Ms. Poole for taking action and support her 100%.

A perfect example of the high-quality education that CCSD is providing Cherokee County's kids under the leadership of Dr P and the School Board (with the exception of Ms Marlow). You can't fool smart kids or smart citizens for that matter. Ms Marlow should understand that her methods are flawed, her lack of knowledge of her role and board procedures are such that she needs to step down. Please resign and let the county move on past the disturbing atmosphere and myriad of unnecessary issues that you have brought to our school district.
