Strengthening the family is the goal of the International Family Foundation. Our creed says:

“We believe that the family is the first and basic institution of humanity. More than any other group the family determines who we are. We want the family to be recognized, supported, and preserved in our city, nation, and the world. We believe the family represents man’s best hope for unity in the world. In the family all of mankind has a common bond, stronger than military, economic, educational and political ties. The family is, therefore, the primary institution for peace in the world. We acknowledge our beliefs by showing love first to our own family members. We pledge respect for the rights of all those in the family of man. We want to touch the world, one family at a time.”

Long before there were legal pronouncements about marriage, the first man and woman were presented to each other in marriage. Not only were they to heal each other’s loneliness but they were to bring children into the world to continue the human race. The family is, therefore, the oldest and most significant human institution known to man with marriage as its underpinning.

Today’s most dangerous threat to our society is the persistent effort to destroy the family. Not only does the family represent the core of emotional support for most of us, it also underpins the core foundation of our educational, political and societal institutions. The Scottish poet said, “Home is where, when you have to go there, they have to take you in.” Family usually means there is a place you can turn. No other group can provide such emotional security for most of us.

Any force that supports parents in the process of providing a loving and maturing place for children to grow up is one we should endorse. Any effort to divide, weaken or destroy the family must be resisted and condemned. What our world needs more than anything else is strong families.

In times of stress or tragedy we pull together and reach out to those in need around us. That’s a common trait that reflects our desire to include those who are in need and less fortunate. It’s a characteristic of the “family” of man.

Parents have no greater mission than to produce children who hold these values dear and can be leaders of the next generation. How’s your family doing at this most important task?
