Capt. John Kirby, a Pentagon spokesman, says the U.S. has no reason to believe the supplies are headed anywhere other than Russia’s naval base in the Syrian port city of Tartus. There have been ongoing questions about whether Russia was using the ships to provide arms to Syrian President Bashar Assad’s regime, a move the international community would oppose.
Initial reports were that Moscow was preparing to send two ships. This was the first time officials suggested there were more.
Kirby says the U.S. has made it clear that any move to provide support or arms to the regime would be “intolerable and unacceptable.”
