What’s really wrong?

DEAR EDITOR:

Dr. Frank Petruzielo began his career 47 years ago in the nation’s fourth largest school district as a high school English teacher in Dade County, Miami, Fl. (source: his own resume on the Cherokee County Board of Education website.)

Since the School Board extended Dr. P’s contract another two years, last year, and he was to be only a five-year solution after Corky Jones’ departure when he arrived, has the board initiated any effort to address Dr. P’s departure when the current contract is up?

If he went to college immediately after high school, we can assume that he started teaching no earlier than age 22, probably 23 or 24. Taking 22 plus 47 would put his age at 69.

Specifically, in any “good” business environment, succession is more than important, it is mandatory for the health of the organization.

At what point does “term limit” not apply to the superintendent’s position?

There are no term limits for professional personnel, especially when the results they're getting are great. I'm glad Dr. P has such a long career full of experience and professionalism. Our community and our parents should be supportive in the same way he supports our children and teachers. If anyone should be held accountable, it's our legislators who've bled budgets and given away corporate welfare across the state, making our school operations unstable and less competitive.

I'm having a hard time understanding the desire to oust Dr. P as the superintendent. Can someone explain why a community would be so anxious to make a change to someone who orchestrated a complete turn around of the school district to one of the most successful in the area? I have only heard "he was supposed to be a short term solution", "he's old", "he's grumpy" and some other city 20 years ago had an issue with him.

Cherokee is so anxious to get rid of this man that some residents ginned up a false police report accusing him of attempted murder. You'd think someone could point to something specific this man has done besides giving a good portion of his life in service to the community (albeit well compensated).

Addition by subtraction can only be substantiated when you can provide some reasoning for why this man is harming our school district. Until this point it sounds too much like sour grapes.

To nameless person,

The harm to the school district is in perpetuating the idea that the sole reason for school performance is the Superintendent. You totally denigrate the total commitment of the teacher's who are the one's raising who raise the counties Standards. As with the promise to remove the tolls on 400, we WERE sold on the fact that Dr. P. IS to be a 5 year plan when offered the job. Now after 15 years of underground contention why are you surprised to see it surface?

Oh, and I am 65, so I don't see this as an age issue which you seem to see.
