ATLANTA — Mike Bobinski, who has been in charge of Xavier’s athletic department for 12 years, was named Georgia Tech’s athletic director Wednesday.

Georgia Tech president Bud Peterson said Bobinski will be introduced at a news conference on the Georgia Tech campus Friday and will begin his new job April 1.

Bobinski was hired as athletic director at Xavier in 1998. In 2004, he was named associate vice president for development and was in charge of the university’s fundraising efforts. He returned as athletic director in 2006.

Peterson said Bobinski’s background in fundraising made him an especially attractive candidate.

“Mike’s proven record of success and his diverse background in sports, finance and development, as well as his unwavering commitment to student-athletes, make him the ideal person to lead our athletic program,” Peterson said.

Bobinski will replace Dan Radakovich, who stepped down as Georgia Tech’s athletic director in October to head Clemson’s athletic department. Paul Griffin has served as Georgia Tech’s interim athletic director.

Bobinski is the current chair of the NCAA Division I men’s basketball committee.

He was Akron’s athletic director from 1994-98 and was the associate athletic director at the U.S. Naval Academy from 1989-94.

A native of Yaphank on Long Island, N.Y., Bobinski is a 1979 graduate of Notre Dame, where he played baseball for four years. He is a licensed certified public accountant and worked for the Walt Disney Company in Orlando, Fla., before serving as Notre Dame’s assistant business manager from 1984-89.
