MACON, Ga. (AP) _ Officials say a 24-year-old man who died while trying to rescue three children from drowning was in training to become a Macon firefighter.

Bibb County Coroner Leon Jones says the body of Michael Dewayne Jones was pulled from Lake Tobesofkee on Saturday about an hour after he disappeared.

Family members say Jones went to the northeastern portion of the lake on Saturday to go fishing with his wife and three sons.

Investigators say Jones apparently rushed into the lake to help his 5-year-old and 7-year-old sons and an 8-year-old girl.

They say he was approaching the shore with the elder boy when he apparently slipped and went under.

The children all made it to shore.
