“The Chamber board is looking to update and renovate their spaces and the idea came up that our students could come up with a plan for them,” said Ginger Burton, Chattahoochee Technical College’s interiors instructor.
Eight students from the school’s interior design program presented the two plans to members of Chamber’s board of directors.
The plans offered suggestions to redesign the Chamber’s boardroom, library and lobby.
The plans covered everything from new flooring and wall colors to reupholstering chairs and installing decorative storage.
Burton said the class, which has eight students, had three weeks to work on the project.
“Real world experience is very important these days,” she said. “They learned how to manage all the details of a large-scale project while keeping to deadlines.”
The plan also included quotes on how much the project would cost.
To redo the three rooms to the student’s design would cost the chamber about $24,000.
But students will not see their ideas come to fruition anytime soon.
“Our building is 18 years old and we’re looking at a long-term facility improvement plan,” Pamela Carnes, Cherokee County Chamber of Commerce President and CEO, said. “This is something we would be able to do in different time blocks, but in the end, it would all fit together.”
Carnes said the idea to let students redesign the chamber’s facility came from Chamber board member David Simmons, who also serves on the Chattahoochee Technical College board of directors.
“This was an excellent way to integrate students with the local business community,” Carnes said.
