CANTON — Three teens from Waynesville, N.C., were arrested Tuesday morning after authorities said they stole a Jaguar in their home state and were taking it for a joy ride to Florida.

A Cherokee County Sheriff’s deputy spotted the car traveling south on Interstate 575 near the Bells Ferry off ramp and initiated a traffic stop, said Lt. Jay Baker, spokesman for the Sheriff’s Office. Baker said Cherokee 911 dispatchers were notified Tuesday morning by North Carolina authorities that a stolen vehicle from their state was possibly in north Cherokee County. He said a cell hone in the vehicle had transmitted from a cell tower in Ball Ground.

The driver, Dustin Surrett, 19, was arrested on charges of theft by receiving and has outstanding warrants in Haywood County, N.C. Baker said. Passenger Tessa Upton, 17, was arrested and also charged with theft by receiving. As of Tuesday evening, both remained in the Cherokee County Jail with $5,700 bonds. Another juvenile passenger, 15, was also arrested for theft too and was transported to the Marietta Youth Detention Center.

And for what? Living for the minute. What were ya'll going to do if you did get to Florida; rob a store, I'm sure you didn't have 300 dollars between all of you, and I'm quite sure ya'll didn't think that far ahead. I mean you'd have to think like 6 or 8 hours ahead. That's a lot of stress on such stupid minds. Then when you were caught you would be along way from home; that thought never entered the inside of the stolen vehicle.
