The Savannah Morning News reports that Tybee Island Police Chief Bob Bryson met the retired wrestler at a local gym, and he seemed like a good fit for the job.
Bryson said Oates brings a lot of energy to the department and has excellent customer service skills.
The 63-year-old Oates began pro wrestling at age 22 in Orlando, and won several titles. He also operated a gym in Columbus for two decades.
Oates lives in nearby Thunderbolt, and rounds up lost pets on Tybee Island as its animal control officer.
