OPELIKA, Ala. (AP) _ Authorities say a jury is expected to begin deliberations in the capital murder trial of a Georgia man accused of killing a Lee County sheriff’s deputy in 2009.

Prosecutors accuse 39-year-old Gregory Lance Henderson of Columbus, Ga., of striking Lee County Sheriff’s Deputy James Anderson with his car while fleeing from a traffic stop in Smiths Station.

The Opelika-Auburn News reports that Henderson faces possible sentences of life in prison without parole or death if the jury finds him guilty of capital murder.

In opening statements, defense attorney Jeremy Armstrong said Henderson did not intend to run over the deputy and wanted to help free Anderson from under the car afterward.

The jury is expected to begin deliberating Tuesday.
