What are your plans for Christmas? This year, we are going to have Christmas at home. I’m in Kentucky. We will have friends and family over for dinner and have a gift exchange.
What are your Christmas traditions? We have good food, a nice big meal and wrap presents. We try to also give to charities this time of year. I always open my last Christmas present on New Year’s Day.
What does Christmas mean to you? To me, it’s all about the birth of Christ and how blessed we are to have him as our savior.
Bob Rugg, chairman, Cherokee County Republican Party
What are your plans for Christmas? We are in the San Francisco Bay where our children and grandchildren live, so we came out here to visit them. We will be back next Monday.
What are your Christmas traditions? We don’t really have traditions. I was brought up in the New England area and growing up, Christmas brought three to four feet of snow and it was very scenic time.
What does Christmas mean to you? The true meaning is exactly what the Bible teaches. It may not be exact date that Christ was born, but it’s the day we celebrate his birth. I wish everyone in Cherokee County a very happy and prosperous New Year and a very Merry Christmas.
Pat Tanner, Canton city councilwoman
What are your plans for Christmas? We’ll have church service at my church and Christmas breakfast will probably be delayed, so we’ll do a brunch or something. We haven’t finalized the arrangements yet because it does fall on a Sunday. We just travel from home to home to home. One year, we went to everyone’s house and had appetizers at one, the main course at one and desserts at another.
What are your Christmas traditions? We have a family tradition where we have Christmas Eve dinner at my mom’s and open gifts there. After that, we leave my mom’s and go to my house and have a light dessert and snacks and open gifts. After that, on Christmas morning we go to my sister-in-law’s house for breakfast and open gifts.
What does Christmas mean to you? Jesus is the reason for the season. That exactly what it means to me. I think we need to get back to the essence of what Christmas is all about.
Robert Wofford, Cherokee County school board Post 1 member
What are your plans for Christmas? We will stay home this year. We will go to church (on Christmas Eve) and spend the rest of the day either at my daughter’s house or here with family.
What are your Christmas traditions? We just like spending time together and enjoying each other’s company. We always go to Christmas Eve candlelight service at our church. We always read the Christmas story from the Bible because we want the kids to understand the meaning behind Christmas.
What does Christmas mean to you? It’s the celebration of the birth of Christ. One reason we spend time with family now is when I was young, my grandparents lived in Tennessee and Christmas was when we all got together. We’re just continuing that tradition.
Amy Yarber, Cherokee County Council of PTA president
What are your plans for Christmas? Everyone comes to our house for Christmas. We will end up having about 21 people at our home on Christmas day.
What are your traditions? We always go to grandparents’ houses on Christmas Eve to go to church and do a big family together at our house because the kids are so little right now.
What does Christmas mean to you? The celebration of the birth of Jesus. It also means being able to spend time with family and friends.
Bill Queen, area director, Fellowship of Christian Athletes of Cherokee County
What are your plans for Christmas? Christmas for us is a time for family and just spending time with each other and celebrating the birth of Jesus.
What are your traditions? We as a family go out to a nice dinner, we drive around and look at the lights and the family takes a picture with Santa the week before Christmas. Each child gets three presents from Santa Claus, representing gifts from each of the Three Wise Men. At home on Christmas Eve, with all lights off and just the Christmas tree lights on, the kids read the entire Christmas story in the Bible. Last year was our first Christmas as a family. I married my wife Heather in April 2010 and have two children and two stepchildren.
What does Christmas mean to you? It means celebrating the birth of Jesus and doing something for someone less fortunate. You get the Christmas spirit by giving, not by the things we get.
