CANTON — A two-car accident in the Union Hill community early Friday morning killed one man and left another man with critical injuries.

Cherokee Sheriff’s Office spokesman Lt. Jay Baker said the fatal collision occurred around 2:30 a.m. on East Cherokee Drive at Union Hill Road.

The victim who was killed in the accident, James Allen Pressley, 48, of Canton was ejected from his vehicle and pronounced dead on the scene.

“He was not wearing a seatbelt,” Baker said.

Pressley was driving a Chevrolet Trailblazer.

The other driver, Darrell Carl Smith, 21, of Canton, remains in critical condition at North Fulton Hospital in Roswell. Smith, who was driving a Honda Prelude, was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident, Baker said.

Baker said Pressley was traveling south on Union Hill Road and Smith was traveling east on East Cherokee Drive.

“One of the drivers failed to stop for a red light at the intersection,” Baker said. Which driver failed to stop is not yet known.

No evidence located at the scene indicated drugs or alcohol played a role in the accident. Blood from both drivers was submitted for analysis, Baker said.

The Cherokee Sheriff’s Office Traffic Enforcement Unit is investigating the accident and the cause of the collision is still unknown.
