CANTON — The first day of spring saw local pollen counts soar to 9,369 particles per cubic meter of air, which is 1,205 points above Monday’s record-breaking count.

Tuesday’s calculation is 55 percent higher than the former record before this week’s soaring numbers of 6,013 set on April 12, 1999.

Following the 8,164 reading on Monday, metro Atlanta residents with allergies are feeling the effects of the allergy symptom-inducing tree pollen.

The highest pollen count measured by the Atlanta Allergy and Asthma Clinic last year was 3,939 on March 24.

However, there may be hope in the form of air-cleansing rain Thursday, according to AccuWeather.com.

The weather reporting site said there is a 40 percent chance of afternoon thunderstorms or rain showers in the metro region and an 11 percent chance later Thursday evening.
