ACWORTH — One man died in a drowning accident in Cherokee County over the Memorial Day weekend.

Statewide, there were 14 fatal traffic accidents reported with 15 victims during the three-day weekend.

In Cherokee County, a Woodstock man drowned Sunday at the popular Galt’s Ferry Day Use area in Acworth.

Deputies responded to the call around 1:50 p.m. after Rigoberto Lara Hernandez, 34, was seen floating in the water soon after entering the lake, said Lt. Jay Baker, spokesman with the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office.

Hernandez was transported to WellStar Kennestone Hospital and later pronounced dead.

The man had gone swimming following a family picnic, Baker said.

“Hernandez had just eaten lunch with his wife before entering the water,” Baker said. “An off-duty paramedic and nurse performed CPR until an ambulance arrived.”

Baker said there was no indication that the man was impaired and an autopsy will be performed this week.
