Lyndon Ahlik Smith, 23, is the second of the victim’s children to be arrested in connection with the beating of his father, 46-year-old Lyndon Baines Smith.
Investigators have also secured warrants for Lyndon Baines Smith’s ex-girlfriend, Karen Lynn King of Canton. The 52-year-old is wanted for kidnapping with bodily injury, aggravated assault and aggravated battery.
Despite all of the arrests and outstanding warrants, detectives have not been able to determine a “clear and definitive” motive in the case, said Lt. Jay Baker, spokesman for the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office.
“The victim has no vision in one of his eyes as a result of the beating,” Baker said Thursday. “He continues to recuperate.”
Baker said U.S. Marshals in Miami arrested Lyndon Ahlik Smith of Atlanta in connection with the March beating.
“It is unknown to us why Smith was in Miami,” Baker said. “The U.S. Marshal’s Office located him on our warrants and placed him into custody.”
Lyndon Ahlik Smith did not face any charges in Miami that he knew of, Baker said.
The 23-year-old was transported to Cherokee County Detention Center on June 8 and was charged with kidnapping with bodily injury, aggravated assault and aggravated battery with his bond set at $121,600, Baker said.
Lyndon Baines Smith’s other son, 17-year-old Alonte Lyndell Smith, was one of the other four arrests made in connection with the beating. Alonte Smith of Canton was arrested May 12 on charges of kidnapping with bodily or ransom, aggravated assault and aggravated battery and is being held at the Cherokee County Detention Center without bond.
Melvin Floyd, 22, of Atlanta, was arrested March 8 on charges of kidnapping with serious bodily injury, aggravated assault and theft of motor vehicle, according to investigators. He was released from the Cherokee County Detention Center on March 17 on an $88,800 bond, Baker said at the time.
Will Cortez Robinson, 24, and Robert Silva Jr., 22, both of Atlanta, were also arrested on March 29. Robinson and Silva remain at the detention center without bond on charges of aggravated battery, aggravated assault and kidnapping with bodily injury.
Baker said Robinson and Silva are acquaintances of the Smith brothers.
The assault occurred at a BridgeMill home on March 4. Later, the Cleburne County Sheriff’s Office in Alabama pulled over a gold 2004 Mercury Sable heading west on Interstate 20 around 4 p.m. during a routine traffic stop.
Cleburne County Deputy Lance Willingham said Floyd, who was driving the vehicle, displayed suspicious body language and was unable to identify the car’s owner, leading Willingham began to search the vehicle. In the trunk of the car, he said he found a beaten man identified as Lyndon Baines Smith.
Lyndon Baines Smith of Gadsden, Ala., was transported to University of Alabama-Birmingham Hospital in Birmingham, Ala., where he was treated for multiple facial and rib fractures, Baker said.
Floyd, 22, was taken into custody in Cleburne County.
Cleburne County authorities told Cherokee officials Smith was attacked in the BridgeMill subdivision, where he was visiting family members, then driven across state lines in the trunk of his own vehicle. Evidence obtained through a search warrant confirmed the claims.
Lyndon Baines Smith was visiting his teen son and former girlfriend in the BridgeMill community when he was jumped by several individuals and beaten at the residence before being placed in the trunk of his own car.
“He was jumped by as many as four people and the next thing he knew he woke up in the hospital in Alabama,” said Maj. Ron Hunton, head of criminal investigations for the sheriff’s office.
According to an arrest affidavit, the “accused continued to kick victim after he lost consciousness,” and Floyd kicked Smith so hard, he “maliciously caused bodily harm to the person by seriously disfiguring him.”
Baker said more arrests are possible and the case were under investigation.
