RaceTrac has requested the county rezone 7.3 acres on the northeast corner of Highway 20 and Old Doss Road across from Target to accommodate a new gas station. The request will be heard by the county planning commission and board of commissioners in July.

RaceTrac Petroleum Inc. has submitted plans to Cherokee County to rezone land along Cumming Highway just east of Old Doss Drive to build a convenience store with gasoline sales.
The property under consideration is a total of 7.33 acres. Portions of the property are zoned general commercial and the company is seeking to rezone 4.64 acres of the 7.33 now designated for residential to general commercial.
The Cherokee County Planning Commission is set to hear the case during its July 10 meeting and the Cherokee County Board of Commissioners will consider the issue during its July 24 meeting, said Zoning Administrator Vicki Taylor Lee.
The proposed convenience store will be located on the northeast corner of Highway 20/Cumming Highway and Old Doss Drive.
The company proposes direct access onto Highway 20 and direct access onto Old Doss Drive “only after it has been reconstructed pursuant to GDOT plans,” according to its application.
QuikTrip Corp. last year proposed similar plans, but withdrew its application in May from consideration by the county commission.
The company’s request was met with opposition from neighbors, who expressed concerns that Old Doss Drive would not be aligned with Commerce Boulevard.
Last year, RaceTrac won approval of a request from the county to rezone 2.45 acres along Highway 20/Cumming Highway at Scott Road from neighborhood commercial to general commercial for a convenience store with gasoline sales.
However, County Commissioner Harry Johnston said it was his understanding the company was not able to work out an arrangement with the city of Canton to provide them with sewer services.
Johnston said Cherokee County Water and Sewerage Authority does not provide sewer in the area and reaching no agreement with Canton caused them to “abandon” their plans near Scott Road.
Johnston said he reviewed RaceTrac’s plans “briefly” and said he noticed they haven’t indicated if they’d provide left-turn access onto Highway 20, which he said may be a “sticking point.”
“I do have to hear all the arguments before I could make a decision,” he added.
