BALL GROUND — Cherokee Sheriff’s Office investigators charged a Ball Ground man Wednesday with sexually assaulting two children younger than 5.

Daniel Baxter, 27, is charged with one count of rape, two counts of aggravated child molestation, two counts of aggravated sodomy, and two counts of sexual battery, according to Lt. Jay Baker, spokesperson for the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office.

The incident was reported to the Cherokee Sheriff’s Office on Tuesday.

Although not related, the victims were acquainted with Baxter, Baker said.

Detectives are unaware of any other victims at this time, but family members of the children are concerned there could be more children involved.

One of the parents, who asked to remain anonymous, said that she wants to get the word out so that other potential victims can come forward and help detectives with the case.

“I don’t want any other families to have to suffer like we are right now,” the woman said.

She said that Baxter was a long-time family friend who lived close to where she and her husband left their children with a relative while they worked.

“We could never of imagined this would be possible,” she said. “This is about two young children.”

One of the children began talking about what had happened, and the family is afraid it could have been going on for some time.

“The child does not have a sense of time,” she said. “We have been talking and are afraid it might have happened more than once.

“I have a feeling that there are others, it’s not something that just suddenly happens. I want to get the word out so others can come forward and help,” she said.

Anyone who has children that have been around Baxter can call sheriff’s investigators at (770) 928-0239 to report any concerns they may have, Baker said.

Baxter remains in the Cherokee County Adult Detention Center without bond.
