ATLANTA — Anders Albertson continued to move up the leaderboard at the Dogwood Invitational, but Friday’s jump wasn’t as dramatic as the rising Georgia Tech sophomore and former Etowah star had hoped for.

Albertson completed a 2-under 70 in his third round at the 6,860-yard Druid Hills Golf Club. But unlike Thursday, when he rose from a tie for 58th into a tie for 23rd, he could only settle into a share of 20th with five others at 2-under 214.

Albertson’s sub-par performance did keep him alive for today’s final round after the field was cut to the top 40 and ties.

He continues to trail former Virginia golfer Bruce Woodall, who maintained a one-shot lead with a 69 on Friday. His third straight under-par round has him at 14-under 202, one shot over MJ Maguire and two ahead of Ben Kholes.

Michael Kim (205) is fourth, with Curtis Thompson and Bobby Wyatt tied for fifth at 206.

Beginning his round in the heat, and ending it with temperatures that had eclipsed 100 degrees, Albertson collected back-to-back bogeys on the par-4 third and fourth holes. But he rallied for four birdies on the back nine, where his lone blemish was a bogey at 17 — his third straight 4 at the par-3.

“I started off kind of poorly,” Albertson said. “I putted pretty well on the back and kind of made up for some missed opportunities on the front. I kind of made something out of nothing (Friday). I was looking for something a little bit lower, but we’ll see what we can do (today). I definitely left some shots out there.”

The high temperatures didn’t seem to bother Albertson, who was well-prepared for what he faced.

“The ball was going a little farther, and I was drinking more water, but it was all right,” Albertson said about the heat. “It was a dry heat, but it was good. We were well aware of what we were going to face, so I tried to wear light clothes and drink a lot. It wasn’t as muggy a day, but it was pretty hot.”

Though he sits well behind the leaders, Albertson isn’t giving up on a comeback and a potential top-five finish.

“I need to make more putts,” he said. “I had a couple lip out (Friday), and I need to get those to fall. I really need to take advantage of the par-5s, too. If you can play those at 5- or 6-under, that’s a huge deal for a low round out here.”

Albertson will begin his final round from No. 10 at 8:35 a.m., playing alongside Auburn’s Michael Johnson.

BridgeMill Athletic Club member William Mitchell failed to make the cut after Friday’s 73 left him at 10-over 226. He was up-and-down through the entire round, carding three birdies and four bogeys.

“(Friday) was just a disaster,” Mitchell said. “(Friday) was just trying to build something for the state amateur in two weeks. It’s kind of a work in progress. I’m not where I want to be right now, but it was respectable (Friday), as opposed to the first two days.”

Mitchell was playing the Dogwood for the sixth time in his career.

“I haven’t made the cut recently. It’s been a while,” Mitchell said. “I’m sort of accustomed to missing it. I probably don’t come here with the best mindset, but it’s a great event. I love coming here. I love the golf course. But, for whatever reason, there are a couple of holes that I struggle with. Every year, it seems to be the same story.”
